Brian McIver is a screenwriter based in Glasgow, with great experience working in continuing drama and comedy.
He has written scripts for BBC Studios series River City and spent two years working in the story room at the popular prime time soap. As part of this role, Brian received story and script training from Kate Oates, BBC Studios Head of Drama.
Brian began writing when he was 13, contributing stories to his local evening newspaper. He then enjoyed a highly successful career as a journalist for national newspapers, shortlisted for several major awards. He covered everything from hard news and crime in Glasgow to humanitarian crises in Africa and India, while also channelling his passion for film and TV into behind the scenes features from locations such as Skywalker Ranch, Pixar Studios and the Big Brother House.
He moved into screenwriting in 2017 and was an inaugural member of the BBC Writers Room Scottish Voices comedy writers group, where he worked to develop a range of projects across the industry. In 2020, Brian created the kids audio comedy The Parrot Who Lost his Pirate for BBC Scotland. He was then commissioned to write radio drama Fissures for BBC Radio Scotland, telling the story of a group of vulnerable teenagers who get lost in an underground cave system. His TV pilot script Careless, a comedy drama about a young carers’ support group, inspired by his own experiences growing up as a carer for a disabled parent, was nominated for the Edinburgh TV Festival’s New Voice Awards, and then optioned for development by Lime Pictures.
Brian is passionate about telling funny, moving stories about young people, families and relationships, and is working on a range of TV and film projects.
