In 2014 John Kelly’s novel From Out of the City (Dalkey Archive Press) was shortlisted for the Irish Novel of the Year at the Irish Book Awards. Hailed by Richard Ford, John Banville, Kevin Barry and others, the book was described by The Irish Times as “ambitious, original, smart, sophisticated and ingenious. It’s the very rare reader who won’t relish it.” And by the Sunday Business Post as “a book which does that wonderful thing of taking your breath away.”
John has written several works of fiction including The Little Hammer (Jonathan Cape) and Sophisticated Boom Boom (Jonathan Cape). Short fiction has appeared in The Stinging Fly, Dubliners 100 and Silver Threads of Hope. His radio play The Pipes starring the celebrated Beckett actor Barry McGovern was broadcast on RTE.
John Kelly is one of Ireland’s best known broadcasters; the award-winning voice of ground-breaking and influential Irish radio programmes such as the Eclectic Ballroom, Mystery Train, The John Kelly Ensemble and Radio Clash. He is also presenter of the RTE television’s arts show The Works – and before that The View. He has written on music and the arts for numerous publications, most notably The Irish Times. He is a SONY, EMA and multiple PPI winner.
